The past 24 hours have been quiet for genuinely strong UK-specific AI impact stories, so today’s bulletin is deliberately shorter.
Rather than pad it with older announcements, there are two fresh international developments worth watching because both could have clear relevance to the UK.
AI is already helping aircraft reduce climate-warming contrails
Cathay Pacific and Google published new results on 7 September from trials using AI to predict atmospheric conditions where persistent aircraft contrails are likely to form.
The system combines AI forecasting, satellite imagery and weather data so pilots and flight planners can make small altitude changes to avoid those areas.
More than 80 flights followed AI-assisted contrail-avoidance routes during the initial trial. Google estimates those flights achieved around a 40% reduction in the warming impact of contrails.
This matters because some persistent contrails trap heat in the atmosphere and could account for roughly one-third of aviation’s total climate impact.
The companies are now expanding the trials across Asian and trans-Pacific routes.
This is particularly relevant to Britain because the UK Government, Google, the Met Office, NATS, Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge are already preparing a related UK-backed contrail programme called Operation Blue Skies over the North Atlantic.

AI shows promise interpreting complex ultrasound examinations
A peer-reviewed study published in Nature Communications on 7 September describes an AI system designed to interpret multi-frame right-upper-quadrant ultrasound examinations.
The system was developed to identify conditions affecting the liver and gallbladder, generate diagnostic reports and help predict whether a patient might require gallbladder surgery.
It was trained using more than 594,000 images from 9,189 cases at Johns Hopkins and externally evaluated using additional data from Stanford and a Chinese medical centre.
The researchers report strong results across diagnostic classification, report generation and surgical decision support.
This could eventually be valuable in areas where ultrasound interpretation is difficult, time-sensitive or dependent on highly experienced specialists.
But this one needs careful framing.
Why today’s stories matter
Neither development is a flashy chatbot launch.
They show AI being applied to two very practical problems.
One is helping aircraft avoid conditions that contribute to global warming.
The other is helping doctors extract more useful information from medical imaging.
